Technology has us spending too much time in collapsed posture. As a result, we are prematurely breaking down our joints and remodeling the holding patterns of our muscles. There are many things you can do to reduce the negative effects of sitting and set yourself up for healthy aging.
The Problem:
We are not designed to sit. Our musculoskeletal system is a dynamic system that is designed to be upright and moving. Technology has us spending a majority of each day in collapsed posture. Collapse postures cause vertebrae to come out of alignment and 4 segments are forced to carry the load of 32 vertebrae. We are all on a crash course for an unnecessary medical procedure or surgery because of collapsed sitting posture.
The Solution:
The solution to minimizing the negative effects of sitting on your spine, hips and knees is to condition yourself to alternate between sitting and standing. This will require an adjustable desk and a stool, preferably a saddle stool to support forward sitting on your sit bone.
How to Sit Healthier:
Step #1: Scoot to the edge of your chair
Sitting without back support forces you forward on your sit bones, increasing your base of support from 1 point of stability (tail bone) to 3 (ischial tuberosities). It also allows you to place your feet wider apart further increasing support.
Step #2: Stack your upper back via a Chest Lift®
You stack your upper back by sliding your shoulder blades down until your sternum lifts without your rib cage flaring. Your skull should reposition on top of your rib cage. A Chest Lift pulls you out of forward head posture.
Step #3 Unload your neck via a Head Nod®
From a “stacked upper back” you can rock your skull back into its neutral position on C1 to unload your low back (cervical spine).
Step #4 Hinge forward onto your sit bones to increase your base of support.
There are many strategies you will need to learn, and physical wellness milestones to achieve to condition yourself to function from healthy posture.
